CONCORD — A Concord man who may have been targeting a marijuana grower sleeping in his bed died after being shot in the residence Tuesday night, police said.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office identified the dead man Thursday as 34-year-old Daniel Gonzalez, of Concord. The man who shot him told investigators Gonzalez was trying to break into his home, police said.

Officers responded at 9:20 p.m. to a home in the 4600 block of Phoenix Street for a report of a shooting.

They arrived to find Gonzalez in the home’s backyard. Emergency first-responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
